9-23-2015 Day 7 Montana Hunt and Fish Adventure
The shot opportunities keep coming!
Today dawned again very early. Up at 0520 to have time to drop Andrew off for his morning hunt and to get me 15 miles to the ranch where I could antelope hunt before daybreak. Dropped Andrew off at the top of Happy Jack draw on the Custer National Forest the I headed for Big Timber and the ranch where I had spotted antelope previously and acquired permission to hunt.
Andrew saw a beautiful dawn as many deer were up and moving early through the draw he was hunting. Andrew had a shot opportunity on a 4 x 3 Mulie at 62 yards, unfortunately the deer whirled at the shot and bound off. We searched for several hours for the arrow and sign to no avail, but that's hunting with a bow. It's plain tough sometimes!! Heck most of the time.
So then we had an awesome brunch of MT sausage and gravy with biscuits. Yummy again!
Then we went scouting some more and spotted a flock of wild turkeys and thankfully I had gone to town and purchased my MT turkey tag for 55$ just the afternoon before. A quick plan was hatched for a stalk and Andrew went along to call out yardage ranges if we could get close. The flock had moved to a draw along side the river and we quickly closed the distance to less than 50 yards. We slowly crept forward and a tom turkey stepped up on a fallen tree at 30 yards. Andrew confirmed it was a long beard as I drew and gave me a final range of 29 yards. I let the arrow fly and center punched the tom and he went down very quickly. High fives were exchanged as we celebrated. Again grateful to be hunting in MT a true hunters paradise

My first turkey ever and with my bow in MT. Now you know why I am smiling so big!
Andrew hunted hard in the evening but had no shooters come in range. Tomorrow will hopefully be a better day for my buddy.

We are thankful to be in Gods creation regardless the outcome but sometimes the sweetness of his handiwork is all that is needed to bring joy to the heart.
Finished the day having dinner with Laury and Andrew in Livingston MT. Graduated HS with Laury in 1984 and this is our first meeting since then and out here in MT..go figure? She was just as I had remembered, sweet, gregarious, and generous with a wonderful sense of humor and a love for all things natural. Thanks for a great evening guys!
