Montana Hunt Day 6

long day sitting in ground blind waiting on the antelope.....legs were tired from chasing and stalking so decided to sit it out and see what happened. had a few close encounters but nothing in range.  tomorrows another day.

Montana Hunt 2018 Day 5

Spent a good part of morning chasing antelope again then headed for high ground via usfs road  421- west deer Creek road to spend rest of day glassing for elk. Spotted one herd late in the day  coming  off public land to feed on private with decent access potential.

Close but not close enough with a bow. Antelocarpa Americana tough hunt.

usfs access 10 miles south of big timber MT
found a good vantage point to glass from

the birds liked my view too- Absaroka Beartooths in the distance
view of black butte in the gallatin national forest
sunset looking east over the gallatin
boulder river valley at sun set

 keep public land public!!!

Montana Hunt 2018 -Day 4

September 1st-2018- Opening day of Deer/Elk Season

Moved from Absarokee to Big Timber  MT today after an early morning antelope hunt.

I've always loved opening day as it gets the imagination going of the what might be to come. Today was a beautiful day. Saw a few antelope this morning but nothing cooperated .
Said goodbye to Absarikeebut i'll be back...nice place and even nicer people
Oh yeah forgot to tell you all they ran out of midsize SUVs so i got upgraded to a dual cab pickup as my ride for the week

House in big Timber across from high school i'm staying at next 3 days..nice location well appointed and very comfortasble

Set up the ground blind midday placed the Montana buck decoy in front of blind at 21 yards

The decoy  worked like a charm. This nice 10 point whitetail came in about 6:30 to see what new buck had encroached on his territory i think.  Shot was taken when he was about 6 yards from the decoy and 17 yards from the ground blind.
MT Buck tag has been punched

Deer only traveled 50 yards after the shot - ground blind is in the background in front of the haystack.

Thanks Dave Campbell for taking a few pics of me in the field and helping load him up
This pic was made before the shot as wanted to see how my make-up job looked. Not to pretty but it worked .

Montana Bow Hunt 2018- Final prep for the hunt

Thanks for following the blog of my Montana hunt. Sorry I'm just now posting but technology has not been friendly to me this past week. I think I have the bugs worked out now? Maybe ;)

Preparation is the key to success in most things, this is particularly so for the bow hunter heading out west. Spent many hours studying maps and devising strategies for a successful public land bow hunt. in west/central Montana. The biggest thing is to spend as much time as possible shooting your bow so you can shoot from numerous positions , standing, kneeling, or sitting at the ranges you feel comfortable shooting at. These groups of shots were taken August 27 2018 at 60 and 70 yards as i made my final push to be ready..
